NASCAR Charlotte 10/07

Connie and I traveled to Charlotte, NC, to stay with our friends and take in the NASCAR race on Saturday night. On Friday we visited Hendrick Motorsports. We were invited to the Lowe's hospitality tent where we saw Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Rick Hendrick. We had a great time visiting with our friends!

By the way, Jeff Gordon won - his second win in 6 days. I was rooting for Martin Truex, Jr., who finished 17th.

N2ARC Station Renovation Project

On August 9, 2008, members of the Delaware Valley Radio Association, the NJQRP Club, and the David Sarnoff Radio Club converged on the Central NJ Chapter of the American Red Cross for a work party to reroute the coaxial cables from our tower/antennas to the new location for the N2ARC emergency communications center. Thanks to all who came out to help!

On November 15, 2008, my son, Curtis, and my 90 year old father-in-law (Connie, N2ATJ's father, Phil Wesp) and I worked about 5 hours to install the structure you see in these photos. On Saturday, November 22, Gary K2GW, Brian N2MPM, Norberto NY8N and myself spent more than 3 hours reassembling the station and got almost everything working again. We also inventoried the new equipment for the "ERV/Van Go-kit" and the "Shelter Go-kit." Some additional photos were taken on 11/28/08.

An Open House, sponsored by the DVRA, was held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008.

DVRA Tower 2009

On Friday morning October 30, 2009, a large team of volunteers from the Delaware Valley Radio Association (DVRA) met at the club's station, W2ZQ, to remove our 100 foot (30.48 meter) tower.

During the summer, a storm knocked a tree into the tower, denting it. The old tower also suffered from old age: lots of rust was in evidence.

John Crovelli, W2GD, a tower construction and rigging expert, was retained as a consultant to lead the project. Thackray Crane company provided a crane, and operator and a safety supervisor.

Since the property is adjacent to Mercer County Airport (TTN) we also had a liaison from airport facilities who gave us a safety briefing in preparation for the project.

The whole event took less than two hours! 73!

Amateur Radio operators of the David Sarnoff Radio Club and the Delaware Valley Radio Association participate in National Emergency Communications Exercises called "Field Day." DSRC operated N2RE from behind the Sarnoff Labs in Princeton, while DVRA operated W2QZ from Mercer County Park.

The Pond Project

2006 Pond Project - This was the year we finally put in our long-awaited pond...Connie ALWAYS wanted a little waterfall....now, in 2007, we are enjoying the pond, along with our new patio, and hope to have many friends over to share our joy!

Recently (June 2007) we introduced about 20 small common goldfish to the pond. After about a week or so, about 5 of the 12 cent fish had died. I theorize they might have suffered from thermal shock, going from the pet store to the outdoors. Since then, none of the remaining fish have died. They even seem to be growing larger!

Each year, Oracle USA sponsors Global Volunteer Days. The company frees up its employees to help out local organizations in the community. Our team helped the American Red Cross of Central NJ reorganize and inventory its disaster relief supplies warehouse, newly relocated to West Amwell, NJ. We accomplished all of our intended tasks on 09-SEP-2009.

Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge Day 2009

PRINCETON, NJ � On Saturday, January 10th 2009, 56 Boy Scouts from Central New Jersey Council earned their Radio Merit Badges at the David Sarnoff Library in Princeton, New Jersey. This was the fifth year that the Library and Sarnoff Corporation hosted the popular event, run by amateur radio operators from the Delaware Valley Radio Association and the David Sarnoff Radio Club.

The Scouts attended classes on Radio Theory, Electronic Circuits, Electrical Safety, Radio Careers and Amateur Radio Operation. They spoke via Amateur Radio to hams across the country and on board the battleship USS New Jersey. They also saw demonstrations of the Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS), sent their names in Morse Code, and learned how Amateur Radio provides essential communications for the American Red Cross and other agencies during disasters.

The highlight of the day was when local ham radio operator, Dr. Greg Olsen, KC2ONX, described his voyage to the International Space Station and how he used Amateur Radio to speak to students from earth orbit. He described how he earned his Amateur Radio license in his youth and how he persevered in his studies and work to earn his PhD in Materials Science and make the trip into space. His talk showed how high you can really go as a ham radio operator if you never give up!

Patio Project

In 2006 Patrick Kane dug out our patio and we had a basic concrete slab installed off the back/kitchen door.

In 2007, our nephew, Ron Wesp, worked his magic, transforming the plain white slab to one that looks like irregular, multi-sized flagstones.

Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge Day 2008

Sarnoff Labs, Princeton, NJ, January 5, 2008, nearly 60 Boy Scouts participated in a program co-sponsored by the Sarnoff Library, the Delaware Valley Radio Association and the David Sarnoff Radio Club. Each boy fulfilled the requirements for the Radio Merit Badge by attending the program and participating in each of four (or five) activity centers. More info will follow.
